1) Diving
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah is the base for many diving outfits that will you set you on a path to some of the most spectacular dive sites in the world. There are various diving spots to choose from Kota Kinabalu, and you will even be presented with an array of wreck sites that you can dive. Visit Sabah Tourism's section on dive operators for a list, most of which offer 3 day courses for the tourism to obtain your dive license from so as to join the fun.
2) Snorkel, Mini Jungle Treks & Island Hopping
If you just want to casually enjoy the rich underwater life to be found around Kota Kinabalu, options abound. The most popular spot, and closest in proximity, is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Within the park lies the 5 islands of Gaya, Mamutik, Manukan, Sapi and Sulug.
All the islands feature relatively unspoilt coral reef with a myriad of colourful fish and other underwater life. The islands also have official and unofficial paths kriss-crossing them and can make for an adventurous activity. In general, the islands are not inhabited by fierce creatures, although you might encounter a rather scary looking and surprisingly big monitor lizard or two. Some interesting bird species will be spotted and, if you're lucky, a monkey or two.
3) Sunset cruises
Many tour operators in Kota Kinabalu provide sunset cruises that will take you through the islands and back, with some offering dining and activities on board. Watching the sun setting into the sea is a very memorable experience.
4) Fishing
The areas around Kota Kinabalu and Mengalum Island are home to a variety of fish. The South China Sea is rich in marine resources and many game fish species such as black marlin, sail fish, tuna, giant barracuda and giant trevally are often caught. Those who want to show off their fishing skills can join an international fishing tournament held in Kota Kinabalu once a year.
5) Golfing
Can be enjoyed all around Kota Kinabalu. Golf courses here are popular destinations among international golfers. The notable ones include the Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club, Nexus Karambunai Gold Course and the Borneo Golf Resort. You can find many golfers’ packages at one of the tour agents in the city.
6) Water sports
Kota Kinabalu by a speed boat, the marine park boasts white sandy beaches with crystal clear water and an array of stunning coral reefs. Choose from a variety of activities such as swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling, parasailing, kayaking, wind-surfing, water-skiing, jet skis and banana boat rides.
Nature of Kota Kinabalu
There are many leisure and conservation areas around Kota Kinabalu, is a waterfront entertainment spot in the city centre which features restaurants, cafes, pubs, and a nightclub. The beach is complemented with a number food and drink stalls, restaurants, and night entertainment clubs.
The only remaining patch of mangrove forest that once existed extensively along the coastal region of Kota Kinabalu. The Green Connection Aquarium just outside the centre of KK showcases the fish, coral and reptile biodiversity of Sabah, with exhibits on many of the aquatic ecosystems of Sabah.
